About

Since the publication of the key quantified drivers of the Shared Socio-economic Pathways (GDP, demographic elements, urbanization), numerous extensions emerged in the literature: quantifications of the dimensions of the SSPs that were parts of the narratives but not quantified.

The goal of this Explorer is to provide a platform that gathers the extensions in one place, accessible to users with multidisciplinary research questions related to the socio-economic characteristics of future societies and implications for climate change.

Contributions

The SSP Extensions Explorer was a collaborative effort, made possible also by contributions by the authors of the publications underlying the indicators. Our sincere thanks goes to the authors of the “Behind the numbers” features: Helene Benveniste, Jesus Crespo Cuaresma, Marian Leimbach & Johannes Koch, Julia Leininger & Christopher Wingens. We are also grateful to Kanishka Narayan & Narasimha Rao who provided us with their respective datasets and clarifications.

Disclaimer on region aggregates

The studies shown in this Explorer developed projections for the SSPs at a national resolution. To improve usefulness for users, the projections were aggregated to global ("World") and regional levels (R5, R9 and R10).

The definitions of the aggregate regions are available in the IAMC common-definitions repository.

Depending on the indicator, regional aggregates ("World" and R5/R9/R10) were computed as unweighted mean and/or weighted mean by GDP and/or population from provided national projections using the 2013 SSP release of basic drivers. This implies that countries not included in this dataset or the SSP release are omitted from regional aggregates included in this database.

The indicators available here are derived from the initial release (2013) of the SSP drivers accessible via the SSP Scenario Explorer or the Wittgenstein Centre Data Explorer for detailed demographic projections together with the updated projections (v3.0 2024 release). The data is also available via the legacy SSP web database .
